Visitors to the National Coal Mining Museum, Wakefield can expect six fun-filled weeks of special events and activities this summer.
From 22 July – 3 September 23, the museum is hosting a special programme of events to celebrate its latest exhibition Rescue! which tells the fascinating stories of men and women who worked in extraordinary conditions to save lives in the mines.
Visitors to the museum will also be able to meet representatives from the different emergency services every Friday throughout the school holidays including the Red Cross, RNLI, Fire Service, Air Ambulance, Police Dogs and Mountain Rescue.
In addition, visitors can also make the most of the great outdoors with a wander through Pit Wood, play in the Adventure Playground or build sandcastles in The Beach at Hope Pit.
There will also be a daily Science Show, lots of hands-on summer, making activities in the Makers’ Shed as well as science fun in Caphouse Creators or STEAM Club (every alternate week).
Shaun McLoughlin, Mine Director at the National Coal Mining Museum said, “This summer promises to be a busy one with lots of special events and activities to help keep the little ones entertained throughout the school holidays. We’re delighted to have our ever-popular beach back as well as new experiences including special visits from all the different emergency services. Other activities also include the Paddy Train (weather dependent), Blacksmith Demonstrations, Horse Keeper talks and lots, lots more so we look forward to welcoming visitors old and new.”

The National Coal Mining Museum tells the story of coal at how it changed the nation forever. Located at Caphouse on the site of two former working coal mines, visitors can journey 140m underground on a guided tour led by a former coal miner and hear the fascinating stories about their careers and the industry’s history.
Above ground, the museum also houses a range of galleries for both permanent and temporary exhibitions, Pony Discovery Centre, Nature Trail, Adventure Playground and Learning Hub for school and educational visits. It also hosts a varied programme of special events throughout the year.
