Families across North Yorkshire can enjoy a free live theatre performance at their local library during the October half-term.
Award-winning York theatre company Next Door But One is touring its production of The Firework-Maker’s Daughter across six libraries in the county. Funded by Arts Council England, the tour aims to bring professional theatre directly into local communities, removing travel and ticket cost barriers for local families.
Based on Philip Pullman’s popular children’s book, the story follows the hero Lila as she travels across mountains and lakes, encounters talking elephants and magical creatures, and learns to follow her dreams. Each show features puppetry, Makaton signing, and audience participation.

The performance schedule includes:
- Selby Library: Saturday 24th October at 10 am
- Tadcaster Library: Saturday 24th October at 2 pm
- Ripon Library: Thursday 29th October at 10.30 am
- Northallerton Library: Thursday 29th October at 2.30 pm
- Scarborough Library: Friday 30th October at 10.30 am
- Pickering Library: Friday 30th October at 2.30 pm
“We are delighted to be able to offer families the opportunity to experience high-quality live theatre free of charge in their local library,” said Cllr Simon Myers, Executive Member for Culture, Arts and Housing at North Yorkshire Council. “By bringing performances into communities across North Yorkshire, we can help remove barriers such as travel and ticket costs, ensuring more children and families can enjoy the magic of live theatre.”
Capacity at each library is limited, so booking is required. Families can reserve places by calling or emailing the participating libraries directly. Further information is available via northyorks.gov.uk/libraries.
