With the first Harry Potter films turning 25 and a new TV series launching this December, Harry Potter fans are being urged to head to York for a real-life taste of the wizarding world.
Jerry Rebbeck, a local expert from Wheelwrights York, says the city’s medieval streets and wizard-themed businesses make it a top destination for fantasy lovers.
At the heart of the appeal is The Shambles, a narrow cobbled street lined with overhanging timber-framed buildings that closely resemble Diagon Alley. While the street was never used as an official filming location, its theatrical medieval architecture draws visitors from all over the world.
Fans can visit specialized shops like The Shop That Must Not Be Named for official merchandise and collectables, or drop into The Potions Cauldron at 9¾ Shambles for themed drinks in an apothecary setting.
Beyond The Shambles, visitors can take part in potion-making at the Potions Academy, play wizard-themed mini-golf at The Hole in Wand, or join the family-friendly Wizard Walk tour through the city streets.
“The combination of Harry Potter-inspired experiences and the city’s history makes York such a distinctive destination,” said Jerry Rebbeck. “You’re not visiting a themed attraction but exploring a real medieval city that already has many of the atmospheric elements associated with fantasy.”
The city also offers plenty of free historical attractions, including two miles of accessible medieval walls and historic snickelways to explore. Visitors travelling this winter can also combine wizard-themed activities with the annual York Christmas Market, which runs from 12th November to 21st December 2026.
