The National Coal Mining Museum for England is excited to announce the reopening of its iconic underground tour, following a brief pause for essential upgrades to the winder machinery. This critical upgrade ensures that visitors, both now and in the future, can safely experience the deep depths of the country’s rich coal mining heritage.
Starting in April, visitors will once again have the chance to descend 140 metres below the surface on this thrilling and immersive journey through time. Guided by former miners, the tour offers a personal insight into the life of a coal miner, with each guide sharing their own unique stories and experiences, making every trip underground a one-of-a-kind adventure.

For younger visitors under 5, there’s an alternative overground experience. The new Time Tunnel attraction uses digital technology to bring the history of coal mining to life through sights, sounds, and smells, providing a sensory experience for the whole family.
Lynn Dunning, CEO of the National Coal Mining Museum for England, expressed her excitement: “We are excited to welcome visitors back to our underground tour, it’s a truly unique experience and one which people treasure for a lifetime. Every trip underground is different as each former miner who leads the tour shares their own perspectives, memories, and experiences. A visit to our museum is a wonderful day out for everyone. We have so much to offer inside and out across our 40 acres, and we look forward to welcoming you soon.”
To celebrate the reopening, the National Coal Mining Museum invites everyone to explore the fascinating world beneath their feet. Tickets for the underground tour are available now, with a recommended donation of £7.50 per person. Advance booking is advised to secure your spot.
