Parents and carers with children due to start primary school in North Yorkshire in September 2027 can now apply for their places.
The application window is open for children born between 1st September 2022 and 31st August 2023. Families are advised to list up to five school preferences ahead of the firm application deadline on 15th January 2027.
The announcement follows a record-breaking year for admissions in the county, with 96 per cent of families in North Yorkshire securing their first choice of primary school, up from 95 per cent the previous year.
“We know that choosing the correct primary school for families is important, which is why we have included lots of information about the application process and details about the county’s schools on our website,” said Cllr Annabel Wilkinson, executive member for education, learning and skills at North Yorkshire Council. “For a child to be allocated a school place, it is crucial that you make an application to the local authority where you live, and the deadline to apply is January 15, 2027. If parents or carers apply after the deadline, this could affect the allocation of your child’s school place.”
The council reminds families that applications must still be submitted even if a child already attends a nursery attached to the school or has an older sibling enrolled.
Parents are also advised to check North Yorkshire Council’s home to school travel policy when listing choices. Free transport is provided to the nearest suitable school with available places where the distance exceeds statutory walking limits, and catchment schools may not always count as the nearest school for travel purposes.
School place allocations will be officially announced on National Offer Day, 16th April 2027. Further information and application forms can be found online at northyorks.gov.uk/primaryadmissions.
