Thousands of visitors are set to gather on Scarborough’s South Bay seafront on Saturday, September 12, as the annual Goldwing Light Parade returns to the coast.
The free event, which has drawn up to 12,000 spectators in previous years, brings together illuminated motorcycle enthusiasts while raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance service. Around 100 Goldwing motorcycles decorated with neon and LED lights will gather on Scarborough Pier between 12pm and 4pm for public display.
The evening procession begins at 8pm, travelling via Spa Bridge, Foreshore Road, and Marine Drive to Peasholm Gap before looping back to the pier. Organisers confirmed that the traditional finale fireworks display has been cancelled this year due to safety concerns and national advice following recent wildfires.
“Events such as this play an important role in attracting visitors to our coast and boosting the local economy,” said Cllr Simon Myers, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for arts and culture. “The combination of the illuminated motorcycles and entertainment creates a spectacle that helps showcase Scarborough as a vibrant destination and raises vital funds for the air ambulance’s work.”
Event organiser, Danielle Scott, added: “Visitors can expect bikes decorated with lights galore, music, and even the occasional fancy dress costume, creating a fun and vibrant atmosphere for all ages.”
Several road closures will support the event. Foreshore Road, Sandside, and Eastborough (from Globe Street to the seafront) will be closed from 7:30pm to 10pm. Rolling closures will operate along Marine Drive and Royal Albert Drive between 7:30pm and approximately 8:45pm.
