Sheep Shearing Returns to Cannon Hall Farm After Four-Year Hiatus

Cannon Hall Farm, the beloved family-run farm in Barnsley, has announced the return of its much-missed sheep shearing demonstrations this summer, after a four-year break. Visitors will once again have the chance to witness the fascinating and physically demanding art of sheep shearing, a highlight of the farming calendar.

Since opening to the public in 1989, Cannon Hall Farm has been a popular destination for families and animal lovers. The annual sheep shearing demonstrations had become a staple attraction, showcasing the expertise required to shear a sheep efficiently and keep the fleece intact. However, due to the pandemic, these demonstrations were halted, and the essential task was carried out behind closed doors.

Now, in time for the half-term holidays, the daily shearing demonstrations are set to make a triumphant return. Visitors can join the farmers in the roundhouse display barns, where they will shear flocks of rare breed sheep and explain the significance of this crucial farming task. The demonstrations will also provide insights into the journey of the wool, from shearing to spinning, and its eventual transformation into yarn.

Farm director Robert Nicholson expressed his excitement about the return of the demonstrations. “Shearing is a really important part of the farming calendar and it is so exciting that we can finally return to demonstrating this to help educate people about this skill,” he said. “For the first time ever, we will be shearing our own Dutch Spotted Flock to make our very own balls of wool. Not only will we be shearing the sheep, but we will also be following the journey of the fleece to the spinning as it is made into yarn to sell in the farm shop.”

The return of the shearing demonstrations is expected to be a hit with visitors, who have long enjoyed Cannon Hall Farm’s engaging and educational activities. Known for its daily online videos featuring the charming animal personalities residing at the farm, Cannon Hall Farm has also gained fame as the host farm for Channel 5’s TV show “Springtime on the Farm.”

Whether you’re a regular visitor or a first-timer, this summer presents a unique opportunity to witness a centuries-old farming tradition up close and learn about the vital role it plays in sustainable farming practices. Don’t miss out on this exciting return—plan your visit to Cannon Hall Farm and be a part of the sheep shearing season.
