North Yorkshire Council’s library service is launching a recruitment drive for young volunteers aged 13 to 24 to help run its annual Summer Reading Challenge.
Organised by the Reading Agency in partnership with Universal Music Group UK, the nationwide initiative challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books over their school summer holidays. This year’s theme is Read to the Beat, which focuses on the connection between stories and songs to explore how reading and music ignite childhood creativity. The curated book collection will feature stories about musicians, creative expression, rhythm, and musical traditions.
Volunteers will work alongside library staff to sign children up for the challenge, help them select books, hand out rewards, and run interactive library activities. The council notes that the role provides young people with an excellent opportunity to build social skills, gain confidence, and give back to their local communities.
North Yorkshire Council’s Executive Member for Arts and Culture, Cllr Simon Myers, said:
“Once again, we are looking for volunteers to be part of the campaign in the knowledge that they are helping to inspire the next generation of readers. Young people who help to run the challenge gain social skills and benefit from improved confidence, as well as becoming more familiar with their local library. I would encourage everybody with free time over the summer to get involved.”
Those interested in volunteering can apply online via the council’s portal or by visiting their local library.
