Skipton is an excellent little place to visit for families as there is much to see and do in this historic market town. Explore the beautifully preserved castle which sits at the top of the town’s award-winning High Street before taking a nature walk through Skipton Woods. Perhaps, spend a couple of hours cruising along the scenic Leeds-Liverpool canal on one of the regular day boat trips, before letting the kids run free in the new playground at Aireville Park. There are child-friendly cafes, restaurants and pubs plus a cinema, leisure centre and an excellent American Bowling place with it’s very own soft play area. If you’re considering a day out in Yorkshire with the kids, then Skipton is certainly worth a visit, even on the wettest of days.
One of our favourite things about Skipton is its electic array of independent shops. One can easily lose a few few hours , browsing little boutiques and quirky gift shops. Shopping isn’t just for the grown-ups either – at least it isn’t here! Skipton also has quite a few independent shops which are often a big hit with the kids and provide the perfect opportunity to spend some pocket money or pick a birthday gift. Here are some of our favourite shops in Skipton for children…
You’ll find Sarsaparillas Sweet Shop right at the top of Skipton High Street. This delightfully old fashioned sweet shop has been trading in the town for 100 years so is a firm favourite with locals. The interior of the shop still has that lovely traditional feel and their ceiling-high mahogany shelves are lined with jars of retro favourites we all remember from childhood. In addition to their jars of sweets which can be bought by the quarter, they have lots of modern sweets, novelty sweets for the kids, imported American candy, local ice-creams and some of the most delicious handmade fudge we’ve ever tasted!
The Present Planners
This family-run independent toy shop is situated in Skipton’s Craven Court shopping centre. It’s stacked to the rafters with games and toys for kids of all ages. They even have some great games for adults which are perfect for a party night.
