York Biotech Campus To Launch State Of The Art Insect Quarantine Unit

York Biotech Campus (YBC) has announced the launch of a new, state-of-the-art Insect Quarantine Unit following a significant investment into its world-class infrastructure.

The 2,500 sq. ft. specialist facility was completely rebuilt within a vacant unit on the YBC site to enhance the capabilities of its long-standing occupier, Fera Science Ltd. Built to the highest industry standards with a focus on sustainability, the unit provides a purpose-built environment for advanced research into invertebrate quarantine pests, playing a critical role in the UK’s national biosecurity and food security targets.

The facility allows Fera Science Ltd to study a wide range of species under strict quarantine conditions, supporting the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in research concerning invasive non-native species. The project was managed by Axentia Biotech, which provided end-to-end laboratory design and construction expertise.

Liz Cashon, Estates Manager at York Biotech Campus, said: “We’re proud to be investing in this new Insect Quarantine Unit for Fera Science Ltd. It’s a vital facility that supports not only their scientific work but also national and international efforts in biosecurity and sustainable agriculture. At YBC, we’re committed to providing the infrastructure and support our tenants need to thrive, and this project is a great example of that in action.”

Phil Northing, Head of Science Strategy at Fera Science Ltd, added: “This new facility will significantly enhance our ability to carry out high-level insect research in a secure and controlled environment. It’s a key part of our long-term strategy to support sustainable food systems and protect the UK’s natural environment. We’re grateful to YBC for their continued support and investment in our shared vision.”

Simon Ward, MD of Axentia Biotech, also noted: “We’re delighted to have partnered with YBC and Fera Science Ltd on this project, delivering a suite of heavily serviced, high specification laboratories to support the vital scientific work being carried out on the Campus.”

This latest investment further strengthens YBC’s position as a premier UK centre for bioscience innovation. For more information, visit www.yorkbiotechcampus.com.
