If our recent guide to the best bottomless Sunday roasts in Leeds proved anything, it’s that this city has a serious appetite for indulgence. But sometimes, you want more than just a full plate and a refilled glass; you want a bit of a story to go alongside it.

I’ve spent years exploring the Yorkshire food scene, and for me, there is nothing more exciting than a meal that requires you to actually participate. There’s a unique thrill in a dinner that demands more from you than just showing up with an appetite; whether it’s the theatre of a fire-breathing steakhouse or the quiet focus of a DIY hotpot, the Leeds dining scene is currently leaning into theatre in the best possible way.

If you’re tired of the “sit and wait” style of service, these five spots are about to turn your next night out into a full-blown event…

Beyond the Plate: 5 Unmissable Immersive Dining Experiences in Leeds

Etci Mehmet

Best for viral “wow” moments and steak lovers

© The Yorkshire Press

Unit 1, 3 Eastgate, Leeds, LS2 7LY

Seen a video of a gold-leaf steak or a flaming burger on your social media feed? If, however, you’re after a high-energy evening comprising succulent dry-aged steaks, thrilling fire displays, and the most incredible baklava, constructed at your table, get yourself booked in immediately!

I visited Etci Mehmet during their opening week and left not only feeling completely and utterly stuffed, but thoroughly entertained too! It’s a meat lover’s dream, with all the best cuts of steak available alongside delicious kebabs, burgers and grills. Fancy something cheesy? Order the Spicy Giant Meatball, which is jam-packed with oozing cheesy goodness. Feeling boujee? Splash out on the 24-carat gold-covered tomahawk steak.

Crown Hotpot

Best for authentic DIY vibes and groups

Credit: Crown Hotpot

1st Floor, 21 BlenheimTerrace, Leeds LS2 9HJ

Tucked away somewhat secretly above the Taste the Orient supermarket near the University of Leeds, Crown Hotpot is the definition of ‘if you know, you know.’ You have to head through the supermarket and up the stairs to find it, but once you do, it’s a culinary project that feels like a total escape from the city centre.

The experience is centred around a bubbling vat of broth built into your table. There’s a good variety of Sichuan broths to use from, each differing in flavour and spice intensity. Once you’ve chosen your perfect soup, you order your seafood, meats and veggies via tablet. Soon, plates of marbled wagyu, lotus roots, and handmade noodles arrive at your table, and you, the chef, can get to work dipping and swishing your meats through the aromatic broth. It’s chaotic, interactive, and easily one of the most authentic hidden gems in Leeds.

Teppanyaki

Best for birthdays and high-energy “theatre”

Credit: Teppanyaki

Belgrave Street, Leeds LS2 8DD

If you’re looking for a dinner that doubles as a high-stakes performance, Teppanyaki on Belgrave Street remains one of the most consistently fun nights out for foodies in Leeds. While many of the city’s newer openings rely on neon signs and floral walls for their “Instagrammable” appeal, the team here relies on skill, razor-sharp knives, and a fair bit of fire.

The Teppanyaki dining experience is centred around the large iron griddles (the teppan) where you’ll take a front-row seat to the action. Your dedicated chef doesn’t just cook your meal; they perform a choreographed routine of knife skills and egg-juggling that usually ends with a flaming “onion volcano” inches from your face.

For the absolute BEST Teppanyaki experience, you have to go for the Teppanyaki Royale set menu (£74.50 per person). You start with a Zensai mixed appetiser, chef’s salad, and a warming miso soup before the main event kicks off on the grill. Watching the chef handle lobster, king prawns, and teriyaki salmon simultaneously is impressive enough, but when the garlic chicken and fillet beef hit the heat, the aromas are incredible.

It all comes served with their signature Teppanyaki fried rice and stir-fried oriental vegetables. If you still have room for dessert, you can keep it light with melon or fruit salad, but the ice cream is the perfect palate cleanser after all that garlic and flame.

The Alchemist

Best for inventive cocktails and “molecular” science

© The Yorkshire Press

Level 1, Trinity, Leeds LS1 6HW

Best known for its extensive and eclectic menu of inventive cocktails, The Alchemist is often overlooked by people seeking a great place to eat. I’ve dined at the Trinity Leeds venue a couple of times over the past 12 months and loved the food as much as the drinks. The cocktails, of course, are some of the best around, especially when it comes to theatrical flair, but recently, The Alchemist has leaned heavily into “Molecular Dining” too.

If you want your food to sizzle, smoke and bubble just like your drinks, then feast your eyes upon their brilliant food menu for 2026. The French Dip Steak Sandwich is a firm favourite of mine with its rich cheese sauce, burnt onions and smoking rosemary. The smoking boards are also worthy of praise. You get everything you need to build your own fajitas, and your chosen meat is served on a smoking hot skillet.

Room for dessert? I highly recommend the Chocolate Cookie S’mores – a mouthwatering medley of soft, warm cookies, vanilla gelato, freeze-dried raspberries, warm chocolate sauce and fluffy marshmallows that are blow-torched to gooey perfection at the table.

Six by Nico

Best for high-concept storytelling and ever-changing menus

Credit: Six by Nico

9 East Parade, Leeds LS1 2AJ

For those who want immersion without the fire hazards, Six by Nico on East Parade offers a conceptual journey that is easily the closest thing Leeds has to an edible art gallery. What makes this place so addictive is the sheer ambition; the entire menu, theme, and vibe change every six weeks, meaning no two visits are ever the same.

While I haven’t made it through the doors myself just yet, their next launch has moved right to the top of my “must-visit” list. Starting 9th March 2026, they are stepping up the immersion with a six-course murder mystery inspired by Sherlock Holmes and Victorian London.

As a foodie with a decades-long passion for Victorian literature, I honestly can’t think of anything cooler than that! This isn’t just a tasting menu; it’s an investigation. Every dish is designed to reveal “fresh evidence,” and every guest essentially becomes a part of the case as you eat your way through the fog-filled streets of 221B Baker Street. It’s a brilliant way to turn a standard dinner into an interactive game.

The menu promises to be just as inventive as their previous “chapters.” Book in for a sophisticated date night and you’ll have something to talk about between every single bite.

Created by Karl and Kathy Mason, the brand has become immensely popular both in Yorkshire and beyond.

Karl and Kathy were serious gin enthusiasts prior to launching their much-loved gin, but had no experience within the distilling industry. Their love for the spirit inspired them to create a Facebook page entitled ‘Gin and Tonic Friday’. The page brought like-minded gin lovers together and the page quickly attracted a whopping 10,000 followers.

Karl and Kathy were soon being asked to review various gins from across the county. It was then that they noticed a gap in the market and decided it was time that Yorkshire had a great gin of its very own. Masons Original Yorkshire gin was initially produced using an external distillery but it’s instant popularity led Karl and Kathy to establish the very first gin distillery in Yorkshire, just seven months later.

Distilled in two copper alembic stills, affectionately known as ‘Steve’ and ‘Leftie’, their gin is probably one of the most recognisable Yorkshire gin brands to be found on the supermarket shelves. In addition to their Masons Original Yorkshire Gin, they have launched some deliciously unusual varieties which have taken the Yorkshire gin community by storm. Lavender edition and Tea Edition were both introduced in 2015, and more recently, their Peppered Pear Special Edition was launched at Harrogate Christmas Market 2017.

The inspirational couple are as passionate about local produce as they are about gin, so the lavender for their Lavender Edition is sourced Yorkshire’s very own lavender farm and, of course, the tea in their Tea Edition is the finest in the region.

The Masons Yorkshire Gin Range

The Original

42% ABV. Their Pink Particular gin, which is a staff favourite won “Best Contemporary European Gin at the 2016 Craft Distilling Expo in London and those are just a few of the many accolades that they have picked up.

Toby discovered his passion for Gin when taking a distilling course at Heriot Watt, which he found was akin with his love of Chemistry, which he studied at University many years ago.

Throughout their working lives, previous to becoming one of the most watched gin producers in the region, the Whittaker’s both worked in property and it wasn’t until their daughters were set to leave home that they decided to <g class="gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="3" data-gr-id="3">persue</g> their shared passion.

Their first creations were a far cry from their no renowned tipples, where Toby began his mission, experimenting with supermarket vodka before adding local ingredients of all varieties in the desire to reach <g class="gr_ gr_101 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del" id="101" data-gr-id="101">gin</g> perfection.

Cooper King Distiller is a micro-distillery found on the site of a stable. It’s family run and has a delightful shop, tasting room and production area. The company was formed in 2016, has been distilling gin since 2018, and stands out from other distillery’s in the country as they are one of just three to be run on 100% green energy. They also produce one of the most delicious Yorkshire gins available!

The distillery, which has become well known for their delicious, alcoholic blends, was created by Dr Abbie Neilson who was once a scientist, along with Chris Jaume, a chartered architect.

The project began when co-founders Chris and Abbie left their day jobs to travel and enjoy life to its fullest.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Jaume said<g class="gr_ gr_6 gr-alert sel gr_gramm gr_replaced gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="6" data-gr-id="6">:</g> “We both felt there must be more to life than this, so we decided to quit our jobs and spend the money we’d been saving to buy our first house on two one-way tickets to Australia.”

Whilst on their travels, they became enchanted with the Tasmanian whiskey industry, which is somewhat revolutionary, due to the affordability of the distilling process when compared to traditional methods, Jaume says “Before going to Tasmania we thought to make good whisky you’ve got to be in Scotland, and it would cost millions of pounds. But seeing that resourcefulness and innovation got our minds whirring away about bringing the idea back to Britain.”

Upon returning to the UK, armed with a business plan and a lot of ambition they were committed to emulating what they had seen, and set about creating an independent craft whiskey distillery in their home of Sutton-on-the-Forest in North Yorkshire.

Interestingly, the couple sourced their copper whisky pot from Tasmania and believes they’re the only distiller outside of Australia and New Zealand to use one.

Where Does The Name Cooper King Distillery Come From?

Chris’ great-great-grandfather was a prominent figure in the mid to late 1800s. He was a Lieutenant Colonel of the Royal Marine Artillery, and the Cooper King family tree can be followed all the way back to 1030, interestingly, the shield the shield of their ancestors, the Pigot family of Yorkshire, can be seen today in Ripon Cathedral.

Speaking about their venture, they write “Our mission is to bring you outstanding Yorkshire spirits underpinned by craftsmanship, honesty and adventure.

Friends, family and founders have come together to build a truly independent distillery from the ground up. With the stills now fired up, you can enjoy fine spirits produced in small batches without automation, using the very best ingredients that England has to offer.”

What Cooper King Distillery Products Are Available?

Although the first Whisky to come out of the Cooper King Distillery won’t be available until 2022, their dry gin is available to buy now. What’s more the company plants 1m2 of woodland in the Yorkshire Dales for every bottle sold.

Available from Amazon, £44.80, Buy Now

A gin, powered by 100% green energy.

We’ve been combining Juniper Berries with alcohol since as far back as 70 A.D , when they were mixed with wine as a remedy for chest ailments. It wasn’t until the 17th Century that Gin became a popular drink and, with a pint of the potent tipple costing less than a pint of beer, the English poor spent the next couple of centuries completely intoxicated! Fast forward to 2018 and Gin is yet again one of the most popular tipples. There are new brands and new varieties popping up all over the place and I for one would quite like to try ALL of them. As we’re in Yorkshire, it’s only right that we support our local businesses and distilleries by consuming some of the best Yorkshire gins available.

Yorkshire has been producing gin since the 16th century and we can proudly boast that some of the country’s most popular gins come from our county. The weekend is fast approaching and you may be wondering what brand of Gin you should be purchasing next. Supermarkets, off licenses and even Michelin-starred restaurants in Yorkshire now stock a huge variety and, there is only so long you can spend in the gin section without people making assumptions. There are also countless bars offering gin tasting in Leeds. Therefore, we have put together a list of some of the gins crafted in Yorkshire and we recommend you work your way through it at a sensible pace! At the end of this article is a poll, where you can cast your vote for your favourite gin!

19 of the best Yorkshire Gins…

Cooper King Distillery – Dry Gin

Cooper King Distillery, near York, unite state-of-the-art vacuum distillation with the traditional copper pot method to produce a gin which has “incredible savoury lemongrass flavours, a silky mouthfeel and delicate floral notes.”

For every bottle of gin they sell, 1 square metre of native English woodland is planted through their Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust partnership.
