Counter Terrorism Policing and South Yorkshire Police Encourage Summer Vigilance

As the UK enjoys soaring temperatures, music festivals, and World Cup fever, Counter Terrorism Policing North East and South Yorkshire Police are encouraging the public to stay alert and report anything that does not feel right. The annual summer safety campaign is currently running alongside a packed calendar of music and sporting events across the county to highlight the importance of vigilance in keeping everyone safe.

In April, the national terrorism threat level was increased to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely. While major events bring communities together, they can also be attractive targets. Security officials state that the public has an important role to play by remaining alert and reporting suspicious activity.

Superintendent Mark Jessop, the Head of Protect and Prepare at Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said: “Throughout the UK, Counter Terrorism Policing is promoting vigilance through its summer safety campaign. It is also working closely with front line forces, event organisers and businesses to help keep the public safe.”

Superintendent Jessop commented: “South Yorkshire has some great events to look forward to over the next few weeks, including Tramlines and the opening of Fan City to watch the World Cup finals on Devonshire Green. As you enjoy these events and travel to and from the venue, you can expect to see safety messaging reminding you to look out for each other and to act on anything suspicious. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and report it to security, staff or the police straight away. In an emergency, always call 999. You won’t be wasting our time, and your information could prove vital.”

Superintendent Charlotte Bloxham, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “We want everyone to safely enjoy what South Yorkshire has to offer this summer and officers will be on hand at events to answer your questions or listen to concerns.”

Superintendent Bloxham commented: “But we unfortunately can’t be everywhere and that’s where you can come in as our extra eyes and ears. Be aware of your surroundings and if you spot something that appears out of the ordinary, don’t think someone else will sort it. Remember, action counters terrorism. Report it. We’ll do the rest.”
