Thackray Museum of Medicine Receives Grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund

The Thackray Museum of Medicine proudly announces today that The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded it a grant of £228,911 to propel its strategic development forward. This grant follows the museum’s £4.6 million redevelopment, of which the Heritage Fund played a significant role as a major supporter.

“We are delighted to receive this significant grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and to be working with them as partners and supporters once again.” – Edward Appleyard, Chief Executive, Thackray Museum of Medicine.

The project, made possible by National Lottery players, focuses on developing deeper relationships with both existing and new visitors through a series of innovative programming initiatives. These include Thackray Lates, adult-only events designed to explore unique topics with the help of special guests, hands-on experiences, medical experiments, and performances.

“Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, they can work to strengthen their offering, build relationships with new audiences, and share the fascinating story of medical innovation in new ways.” – Helen Featherstone, Director, England, North at The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Furthermore, the museum plans to expand its offerings for families by building on the success of its school holiday activities and the popular under 5s role-play space, Sparks! New strategic areas of work will include in-depth conversations and research with visitors from across Yorkshire.

Additionally, a gardening project involving local volunteers will draw inspiration from medical history and herbalism to transform Thackray’s grounds into a garden of well-being. This, coupled with new signage and lighting, will enhance the Museum’s welcome and its presence on the site of St James’ University Hospital.

“This latest support will enable us to do just that, and maximise all our opportunities, not just for Thackray but for the communities around us.” – Edward Appleyard, Chief Executive, Thackray Museum of Medicine.

The Thackray Museum of Medicine expresses gratitude to The National Lottery Heritage Fund for its ongoing support, which has been instrumental in the museum’s growth and development.

The museum looks forward to celebrating and acknowledging the generosity and commitment of National Lottery players in due course.
