Young Artists Bring Mining History to Life at National Coal Mining Museum

The National Coal Mining Museum for England (NCMME) has launched a new outdoor exhibition showcasing artwork created by local school children. The project, “Animating the Collection,” was developed by artists Lenny and Whale in collaboration with pupils from Horbury and Middlestown Primary Schools.

The exhibition features eight artworks inspired by pieces from the museum’s collection, including Miner and Child by Tom McGuinness, Keep the Pits Open: Protest by Marjorie Arnfield, and Pit Pony by Jack Cyril Ifold. Museum staff and artists worked closely with the schools, bringing original artworks into the classroom to inspire the children’s own interpretations. Their drawings were combined to create unique digital pieces, each of which comes to life through Augmented Reality (AR) when viewed using the Artivive App.

Lynn Dunning, CEO of NCMME, said, “We’re really proud of our art collection and it’s a great way for young people to experience it and at the same time find out more about the history of coal mining. By working with our local communities and going out into our local schools, we can inspire future generations of artists and keep the story of coal alive. The exhibition will be a wonderful addition to the museum, and the AR will really capture people’s imagination.”

The museum will also host interactive workshops led by Fabric Lenny during the Easter holidays. Young visitors will have the opportunity to design characters using drawing and collage before experimenting with animation techniques.

“Animating the Collection” was made possible through support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Entry to the museum and exhibition is free, with donations helping to support the museum’s work. More information about the exhibition and Easter activities is available at www.ncm.org.uk.
