Outdoor Pools And Paddling Spots In Yorkshire: Free And Paid Options For 2026

When the sun finally decides to make an appearance in Yorkshire, the county’s outdoor pools and paddling spots fill up fast. From free splash zones in public parks to heated open-air lidos in some of the most beautiful corners of the Dales and the Moors, there are more options for an outdoor dip than most people realise, and several of them are completely free.

A practical note before you go: these outdoor pools and paddling spots operate seasonally and are heavily weather-dependent. Opening times, session availability, and prices change regularly, and the most popular venues sell out on warm days with very little notice. Always check the venue’s website or social media before travelling, and book in advance wherever possible.

Here’s our comprehensive guide to outdoor pools and paddling spots across Yorkshire in 2026 – free and paid, from north to south.

Valley Gardens Paddling Pool, Harrogate

Location: Valley Gardens, Harrogate, HG1 2SZ

One of the loveliest free days out in North Yorkshire on a warm afternoon. Valley Gardens is a Grade II listed park in the heart of Harrogate, and its dedicated paddling pool, particularly popular with younger children and toddlers, sits within beautifully maintained gardens alongside a play area, cafe, pitch and putt, crazy golf, and a boating pool. Sunday afternoon brass band concerts run throughout the summer, so it’s great for a full family outing rather than just a quick dip. Entry is entirely free, though standard council car parking charges apply nearby.

City Park Mirror Pool, Bradford

Location: City Park, Bradford, BD1 1HY

Bradford’s City Park is arguably one of the finest city centre public spaces in the north of England, and at its heart is the Mirror Pool – a spectacular urban water feature and the largest city-centre water feature in the UK. On warm days, families gather around the fountains and shallow pool area for a spontaneous splash, and the 100 water jets that fire at random are a massive hit with children. It’s free to enter and situated right in the city centre – an easily accessible option and excellent fun for a hot afternoon.

Clifton Park in Rotherham is home to one of the most impressive free splash areas in South Yorkshire. The Water Splash features fountains, a paddling pool, a whirlpool, and lots of water jets, so it’s significantly more interactive than a standard paddling pool. The wider park also has a massive adventure play area, lovely walled gardens, and a cafe, making it an easy choice for a full day out without spending a penny. Another superb choice for an impromptu day out with the kids.

Millhouses Park Free Paddling Pool

Location: Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield, S7 2QQ

Located in southwest Sheffield, Millhouses Park features a popular, beautifully maintained free outdoor paddling pool that has been a favourite for local families for generations. The splash zone is custom-built with shallow water paths and small streams for children to paddle through on hot summer days safely. The wider park is incredibly well-equipped, boasting a large boating lake, traditional playgrounds, skate parks, and an on-site cafe, making it an excellent option for an entirely free day out in South Yorkshire.

Whitby Paddling Pool

Location: West Cliff, Whitby, YO21 3HT

This traditional, well-loved outdoor paddling pool sits right on the West Cliff side of Whitby. It’s free to use and makes a wonderful addition to a coastal family day out. On a warm summer afternoon with the sea in view and ice cream shops close by, it offers a picture-perfect Yorkshire seaside experience. Sun, sea, splashing and not a penny spent? Definitely a winner! The facility operates seasonally, so checking local council opening updates during poor weather is highly recommended.

Bridlington Paddling Pool

Location: Bridlington Seafront, Bridlington

A highly popular free paddling option situated right on the busy Bridlington seafront. It’s ideal for younger children and toddlers, and its convenient location makes it incredibly easy to combine with a traditional beach day on one of the best stretches of sand along the Yorkshire Coast. This one’s open on a seasonal basis through the warmer summer months.

Filey Paddling Pool

Location: Filey Seafront, Filey

Filey’s free paddling pool is another cherished coastal gem. This simple, unpretentious community facility has been delighting local children and holidaymakers on warm summer days for decades. Pairing a visit here with fish and chips from one of the town’s seafront cafes provides a near-perfect, budget-friendly Yorkshire summer afternoon.

Location: Baxton’s Sprunt, Helmsley, York, YO62 5HT

This is the most characterful outdoor swimming pool in Yorkshire and one of the most loved. Helmsley Open Air Pool is the county’s only 25-metre heated outdoor pool – a beautiful lido set in the heart of the North York Moors National Park with rural views you won’t find anywhere else. Run as a charity, it’s been providing affordable outdoor swimming since the 1970s and features recently refurbished facilities. Entry fees are very reasonable, typically sitting around £5.95 for adults and £3.95 for children. Sessions include general public swims, lane swimming, and highly popular moonlight swims held to celebrate the summer solstice and full moons.

Pool Bridge Farm

Location: Wheldrake Lane, York, YO19 6FF

For adults and older families looking for a unique, natural outdoor swimming experience rather than a traditional concrete lido, Pool Bridge Farm is an absolute hidden gem located just a few miles south of York. This family-run destination features beautiful, designated wild swimming lakes nestled directly in the quiet Yorkshire countryside. It bridges the gap between raw open-water swimming and a structured venue, offering lakeside saunas, a cafe, and highly popular evening “moonlight swims”. Unlike the public parks, this is a paid, pre-booked venue with a tranquil, non-alcoholic ethos designed for peaceful swimming and relaxation.

Ingleton Outdoor Swimming Pool

Location: Sammy Lane, Ingleton, North Yorkshire, LA6 3EG

One of Yorkshire’s most community-spirited swimming pools. The 20-metre lido in Ingleton was first built in 1934 with help from local miners on strike at the time and originally filled with water straight from the river. It was modernised in 1974 and is now entirely volunteer-run by local villagers. Centrally located in a beautiful riverside park setting with a viewing balcony, it’s fully heated and open for timetabled hour-long sessions throughout the summer. Prices start from £7.50 for adults and £5.00 for juniors.

Ilkley Lido

Location: Denton Road, Ilkley, LS29 0BZ

One of Yorkshire’s most popular and most photographed outdoor swimming destinations, and one that sells out on warm days faster than almost anywhere else in the county. Ilkley Lido is a massive 45-metre unheated outdoor pool set beneath the iconic Ilkley Moor. Its breathtaking surroundings have made it a major social media phenomenon, with long queues forming before opening on hot days. Peak admission rates sit at £12.30 for adults and £6.35 for juniors, while off-peak early morning or late evening swims drop down to £7.25 for adults and £3.75 for juniors. The lido also features an indoor pool facility for days when the weather takes a turn.

Location: 28 Burniston Road, Scarborough, YO12 6PH

A completely different proposition from the traditional lidos, Alpamare is a massive, modern waterpark complex on the edge of Scarborough. Following a brief closure, the park has happily reopened under the leadership of Flamingo Land’s management group. Outside, you’ll find a beautifully warm garden pool heated to a toasty 35 degrees and an outdoor infinity pool overlooking the coast. Inside, the facility is fully equipped with a giant wave pool, major water slides, and a luxury wellness spa. Ticket prices range from £12 on low-season weekdays to £23 on high-season weekends, offering a premium, complete all-weather backup plan.

Albert Avenue Pools

Location: 94 Albert Avenue, Anlaby Road, Hull, HU3 6QE

An incredible hidden gem on the edge of East Yorkshire. The Albert Avenue Pools complex recently underwent a staggering £10.5 million complete rebuild and refurbishment to return outdoor swimming to the local area. The outdoor pool is a spacious 30-metre lido and is seasonally heated to a highly comfortable 28 degrees Celsius, which is an absolute luxury for a public outdoor lido at this price point. Priced at £7.50 for adults and £5.50 for juniors, it features modern water play toys for children and represents some of the best-value heated open-air swimming in the county.

A Practical Note On Booking

On hot days, Yorkshire’s outdoor pools fill up extremely quickly. Ilkley Lido and Helmsley Open Air Pool in particular are known to completely sell out online within hours of warm weather being forecast. If a heatwave is due and you’re planning a pool visit, download your tickets the night before rather than the morning of to ensure you aren’t turned away at the gate.
