Last updated: April 2026

Looking for afternoon tea in the Yorkshire Dales?

In the mid-Victorian era, Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford, introduced her own devised dining concept to her aristocratic peers. During the 19th Century, the upper classes tended to eat their evening meal at 8 pm or later, and the Duchess would often find herself feeling hungry long before. She began requesting trays of bread & butter and cakes to be served with tea and sent to her room at around 4 pm. Anna would regularly invite friends and acquaintances to join her for tea, and what began as a personal preference ended up being one of the most popular ways to socialise among the Victorian upper classes.

The dining concept was soon adopted by high-end hotels, and the elite of British society would venture out to enjoy tiered silver platters of delicate finger sandwiches and petit fours. Although not something we enjoy on a daily basis, afternoon tea is still very much part of British life. No longer accessible only to the elite and the wealthy, it’s widely available and regularly enjoyed as a treat or for special celebrations.

This luxurious and quintessentially British dining concept is best enjoyed in beautiful surroundings, and few places in the UK are as picturesque as the Yorkshire Dales. This part of God’s Own Country is home to numerous country hotels, gastropubs and quaint cafes offering splendid afternoon teas, and they vary drastically in both price and composition.

If you’re visiting the Yorkshire Dales and fancy an afternoon of refined indulgence, we’ve saved you the job of trawling through search results and numerous websites to find your perfect venue. Here, updated for 2026, are some of the best places to enjoy afternoon tea in the Yorkshire Dales…

Where to Get Afternoon Tea in The Yorkshire Dales

The Fell Hotel (formerly The Devonshire Fell)

IMAGE: The Fell Hotel

Where: Burnsall, Skipton BD23 6BT
Price: £27.50 per person

The Fell Hotel – known to many as The Devonshire Fell before its recent rebrand – is situated on a hillside in Burnsall, overlooking the stunning Yorkshire Dales. In April 2024, The Times named it one of the top seven afternoon teas under £30 in the UK – remarkable for a charming independent tea room in a tiny Dales village, but entirely understandable to anyone who has visited.

Afternoon tea here is served on genuine vintage china and is a real labour of love. The homemade menu typically includes finger sandwiches with fillings such as Yorkshire ham, cream cheese and cucumber, roast salmon salad and chicken salad, alongside a savoury course, beautifully made scones with jam and clotted cream, and a selection of utterly irresistible homemade cakes and pastries. Many special dietary requirements can be catered for with advance notice.

It’s served from 3:30pm and must be pre-booked online or by email. These amazing eateries combine two of my favourite things – animals and cake! I can’t think of a better way to spend a morning than by enjoying home-cooked treats in a cosy cafe where furry friends roam free.

Animal cafes have been around for a number of years, and while there are numerous venues in London frequented by Instagrammers and influencers, Yorkshire has its own incredible collection of unique attractions. For 2026, we have done our research and found five fantastic animal cafes in Yorkshire that are all must-visit for animal lovers. Whether you are looking for a budget-friendly day out for the kids or simply somewhere to grab a coffee and a cuddle, you’re bound to find these venues appealing.

At a Glance: Top Animal Experiences (April 2026)

The best animal cafes in Yorkshire for 2026 are city-centre rescue lounges and unique boutiques where the animals are the core of the experience. Kitty Café Leeds, The Cat’s Whiskers York, and Tabby Teas Sheffield remain the definitive picks for feline lovers, offering the chance to dine alongside rescue cats. For those looking for the ultimate dog-focused morning, the award-winning Kibble Bakery in Skipton offers a unique “hound menu” and interactive social space for pets and their owners.

Kitty Café, Leeds

Photo taken during my visit last year. Such a cutie!

8-9 Kirkgate, Leeds LS1 6BZ

Kitty Cafe in Leeds is one of several Kitty Cafe venues in the UK. This incredible charitable organisation cares for and rehomes cats and kittens from all kinds of backgrounds. Rescue cats, strays and those with medical issues are taken in by the charity and cared for until suitable forever homes are found.

I visited the Leeds branch again last year and was reminded why it is such a popular spot in Leeds, particularly for families. Located on Kirkgate and open from 10 am, it’s a cosy venue with comfortable chairs, a menu of tasty home-cooked grub and several fabulous felines. The menu at Kitty Cafe features a wonderful range of breakfast bites, lunch dishes and sweet treats, so there’s something for everyone.

For 2026, there’s a charge of £8.00 per adult and £6.00 per child. Perfectly reasonable for such a unique experience, plus the funds enable them to maintain high standards of animal welfare for the resident felines.

Visit in the morning and tuck into a Breakfast Omelette stuffed with bacon, sausage and mushroom or book a table at lunchtime and order one of their delicious pizzas like the Breakfast Bonanza or the Vegi-saurus Rex. If visiting as a group, they offer some brilliant sharers including Garlic Dough Balls, Loaded Nachos and a Triple Triple Chicken platter.

Fancy afternoon tea in Yorkshire with a feline twist? For 2026, two can enjoy afternoon tea for just £24.95. This includes a sumptuous selection of freshly prepared sandwiches, Devonshire scones with clotted cream and jam, and a variety of miniature cakes and desserts served with your choice of tea or barista-style coffee. It’s certainly a unique way to enjoy some home-cooked treats while helping provide a loving home for animals in need.

The Cat’s Whiskers

46 Goodramgate, York YO1 7LF

You’ll find The Cat’s Whiskers in a beautiful Grade II listed building on Goodramgate in York. It’s the only cat cafe in York and boasts views of the magnificent York Minster. If you’re looking for something a little different to do during a weekend break or a day trip to York, a breakfast, brunch or lunch at The Cat’s Whiskers is well worth considering. Open every day except Tuesdays, a visit to this animal cafe in Yorkshire now costs £9 per person for a 60-minute time slot, and you need to book online. It does tend to book up quickly, so try to plan to avoid disappointment.

Children over the age of 10 are permitted in the cafe, but those under 14 must be supervised. This is quite understandable considering the cafe is home to many vulnerable cats with incredibly moving stories. While you might still see familiar faces like Snowy and Olaf, the cafe has welcomed several new residents recently. Look out for brothers Moose, Elvis, and Casper, who were hand-reared back to health, or “tuxedo” cat Otto and his brother Ollie. You might also meet Gus and Indy, who were rescued from a hoarding situation and nursed back to health before joining the cafe family.

The sweet treats on offer at The Cat’s Whiskers are still expertly crafted by the team at The White Cherry Bakery in Pocklington. You can cosy up beside one of the resident felines and indulge in a Double Chocolate Brownie, Salted Caramel Shortbread, or a slice of Vegan Raspberry & Vanilla cake.

Tabby Teas, Sheffield

7 Cemetery Road, Highfield, Sheffield S11 8FJ

Tabby Teas in Sheffield is currently home to several furry-faced residents, providing a happy, loving home for spoiled rescue cats. The team behind this superb animal cafe in Yorkshire work closely with local charities to offer homes to cats in need that are suited to the cafe environment. For 2026, they have updated their age policy; guests must now be at least 12 years old to visit. Anyone aged 12–14 must be accompanied by an adult, with a limit of one adult per two children.

It’s a gorgeous little venue run by a team who are passionate about animal welfare, which is evident in the excellent facilities provided for the cats. There are plenty of places for these furry friends to climb and play when the mood takes them, no doubt making for entertaining viewing at times! There are also plenty of spaces for them to curl up and nap when they need a break from humans.

On the menu at Tabby Teas, you’ll find locally sourced coffee from Frazer’s Coffee Roasters and teas from Pollards. They offer a tempting selection of cakes, including vegan and gluten-free brownies from The Adventurous Cakebook, with most cake slices priced around £4.00. If you’re after something savoury, they also stock crisps and Shin Cup noodles for £3.00.

Last updated: April 2026

Whitby’s food scene is every bit as colourful as the town itself. It’s officially the UK’s Fish and Chip Capital for 2026, but honestly? There’s so much more happening here than just world-class batter. You’ve got everything from the iconic queues at The Magpie Café to hidden-gem French brasseries and old-school pie shops tucked away down cobbled side streets. It’s that unique kind of place where traditional seaside vibes meet genuinely exciting modern cooking.

Whether you’ve spent the morning tackling the 199 steps to the Abbey or just getting lost in the independent shops, you’re going to work up an appetite, and luckily, finding a great table is by no means difficult.

From the freshly revamped Tide to the much-hyped summer opening of The Treasury, here is our 2026 insider’s guide to the best spots in town. Use it to map out your must-eats before you arrive!

The Best Restaurants in Whitby for a Sit-Down Meal

Tide (by Trenchers)

8 Bridge Street, Whitby YO22 4BG

Main Courses: £16.00 – £32.00

If you want the legendary Trenchers quality but with a modern, “bistro” edge, head straight to Tide. Following a major refresh in March 2026, this Bridge Street spot has mastered the day-to-night transition. Lunch is a relaxed affair featuring brilliant seafood tapas, but the evening is where it really shines with a refined à la carte menu. It’s stylish, intimate, and perfectly fills the gap between a casual lunch and a proper night out.

TripAdvisor Reviews

Visit Website

The Treasury

17 Baxtergate, Whitby YO21 1BW

This is the one to watch for Summer 2026. Taking over the grand Grade II listed HSBC bank on Baxtergate, The Treasury is set to be Whitby’s most glamorous opening in years. The vaults are being traded for a high-end champagne bar and a menu focusing on premium Yorkshire steaks and local lobster. It’s shaping up to be the ultimate “special occasion” spot – perfect for those who want a side of luxury with their sea air. Keep this at the top of your list for your summer visits.

Visit Website

Moutreys

9 Grape Lane, Whitby YO22 4BA

Main Courses: £12.95 – £22.95

This independent Italian restaurant has been one of Whitby’s most popular dining spots since opening in 2003. The menu is rather extensive, featuring wood-fired pizzas, an array of classic pasta dishes, homemade burgers and freshly prepared salads. A reasonably priced town centre eatery offering a warm welcome and hearty grub prepared with love!

Its popularity is quite understandable. The team consistently delivers good service and equally good food at reasonable prices. Begin with a traditional antipasto washed down with a glass of red, then move on to a scrumptious plate of Moutreys’ signature spicy meatballs. Room for dessert? Check out their specials and finish with something naughty!

TripAdvisor Reviews

Visit Website

Cosa Nostra

West Cliff, Whitby YO21 3HT

Main Courses: £14.25 – £25.95

Sticking with the Italian recommendations, Cosa Nostra on Church Street is a long-standing local favourite offering a traditional, cosy Italian atmosphere.

Located in a beautiful Grade II listed building, the restaurant is split over two floors and offers a more intimate and romantic ambience than the larger harbourside spots.

The menu is pretty much a straightforward celebration of Italian classics, with a primary focus on fresh pasta and hand-stretched pizzas. Their Linguine Frutti Di Mare, loaded with fresh seafood, is a natural choice in a fishing town, whilst the Gambo Tenero Broccoli e Gorgonzola pizza is an indulgent alternative to the classic margherita.

It’s particularly popular for a relaxed evening meal, especially if you’re looking for a spot on the “Old Town” side of the bridge. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel; it just focuses on doing the basics well in a setting that feels genuinely welcoming.

TripAdvisor Reviews

Visit Website

Ditto

26 Skinner Street, Whitby YO21 3AJ

If you’re after something that feels a bit more like a hidden gem, Ditto on Skinner Street is the one to book. It’s a tiny, family-run bistro that feels like a quiet corner of London or Edinburgh has been dropped right into the middle of Whitby.

The interior is stripped back and modern, and because there are only a handful of tables, it has that intimate “dinner party” vibe where you can actually hear yourself think. Perfect for a date night or long overdue catch-up

The menu is short, which is always a good sign, and it changes with the seasons. Here, it’s less about the deep-fat fryer and more about things like baked coley fillet with a shellfish cream sauce or braised beef cheek with parmesan polenta. It’s refined without being pretentious, and you can tell the team behind it really cares about the details.

Just a heads-up, though – because it’s so small you usually need to get your name in the diary well in advance.

TripAdvisor Reviews

Visit Website

Velveteen French Café, Bar & Brasserie

3a Grape Lane, Whitby YO22 4BA

Head over to Grape Lane, one of Whitby’s prettiest cobbled streets, and you’ll find Velveteen. It’s a French café and brasserie that offers something very different to the piles of fish and chips being served just a few doors away.

The vibe here is pure bistro – romantic and candlelit, so it’s another excellent choice for couples. They cover the full French spectrum, so you can drop in for a morning croissant or settle in for the full crème brûlée experience in the evening.

The menu hits all those classic high notes you’d hope for, from moules frites to a very decadent lobster thermidor. It’s definitely one of the town’s best spots for a date night or a “proper” meal when you want to feel a bit tucked away from the seaside bustle with a glass of wine.

TripAdvisor Reviews

Visit Website

Humble Pie ‘n’ Mash

163 Church Street, Whitby YO22 4AS

If you’re looking for the polar opposite of a “fine dining” vibe, you’ll find it at Humble Pie ‘n’ Mash. Located in a timber-framed building on Church Street, this place is exactly what it says on the tin – a nostalgic, 1940s-themed pie shop that feels like stepping back in time.

There’s no pretension whatsoever here. It’s all about locally sourced pies, proper buttery mash, and lashings of liquor or gravy. The decor is packed with wartime memorabilia, and the atmosphere is so cosy it practically hugs you – especially if you’ve just made your way down the 199 steps and need to refuel. It’s a massive hit with families, partly because it’s so affordable and partly because it’s just a fun, quirky place to eat.

TripAdvisor Reviews

Pizza West

West Cliff, Whitby YO21 3HT

Main Courses: £16 – £25

For a change of pace from the harbourside queues, Pizza West on the West Cliff is a breath of fresh air.

Housed in a striking Art Deco building that feels a world away from the traditional seaside aesthetic, the vibe here is modern and incredibly relaxed.

The menu is a step above your average pizzeria. The bases are excellent – thin, chewy, and charred in all the right places. The Pizza Bianca with truffle oil and parmesan is a great option for those seeking something lighter, while the Tuscan Sausage with crispy onions offers a bit more of a punch.

If you aren’t strictly after pizza, the kitchen puts as much effort into its small plates and pastas. The wood-fired lamb chops are consistently good, and for a bit of local luxury, the Whitby lobster pappardelle is well worth an order too.

TripAdvisor Reviews

Visit Website

The Garden Room at Sneaton Castle

Sneaton Castle Estate, Castle Road, Whitby YO21 3QN

Main Courses: £17 – £37.00

The historic Sneaton Castle, with its spectacular chapel and priory, is one of the area’s most popular wedding venues and hotels, but it also boasts an excellent on-site restaurant. While the scenery is the main draw, the food is exactly the kind of reliable, comfort grub you want after a long walk along the coast. It’s arguably home to one of the best Sunday roasts in the area, and they do a cracking afternoon tea too.

The menu is a solid mix of the classics – think Beef & Ale Casserole, Slow Cooked Pork Belly, and a proper Teesside-style Chicken Parmo. The kitchen focuses heavily on fresh, locally sourced seafood, with the Spring 2026 menu highlighting everything from King Scallops with Charred Corn Salsa to Tikka Spiced Trout with Sag Aloo.

Ellie Pawlett, daughter of Kate Pawlett, director and manager of the World of James Herriot in Thirsk, has completed a trek to Everest Base Camp with a special mission. She carried a banner reading “World of James Herriot, High in the Himalayas” to celebrate the attraction’s place in the top 10% of global tourism destinations on Tripadvisor.

Ellie, 27, a nurse at Northumbria Healthcare who worked at the World of James Herriot as a teenager, took on the trek as a personal challenge. She first became interested in such expeditions after walking and climbing Roseberry Topping in the North York Moors National Park and Helvellyn in the Lake District.

“Mum and I were discussing the trip when she told me about the Tripadvisor award and I said ‘Why don’t I take the World of James Herriot to the top of the world?’” said Ellie.

Alan Hinkes OBE with Ellie Pawlett outside World of James Herriot

Alan Hinkes, OBE, a friend of the attraction and the first Briton to climb all of the world’s 8000-metre peaks across the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges, heard about Ellie’s trek and was impressed. After the expedition, the pair met at the World of James Herriot, where Alan signed his book 8000 Metres for Ellie.

“It’s great to meet Ellie after such an achievement and I’m really impressed with the way she prepared for it and showed such determination to manage and complete the trek to Everest Base Camp, which is a risky endeavour, very arduous, can involve days and days of trekking, acute mountain sickness, other hazards and can be potentially fatal. Displaying the World of James Herriot banner at such an iconic location was a great thing to do for my Mum and the team at World of James Herriot.”

“Ellie has told me that she met some lovely people in Nepal which is a lovely place, nearly as nice as North Yorkshire’s Herriot Country,” quipped Alan.

The trek marks a personal milestone for Ellie and a symbolic moment for the World of James Herriot, combining local heritage with the world’s highest peaks.

Leeds Bradford Airport Terminal has been an effective gateway for travellers in Yorkshire and beyond for years. Its operation started in the early 1930s and has grown significantly since then. This year, however, represents a significant milestone in its plans to remain in the big leagues. The airport recorded a new milestone of over three million passengers in 2025, marking one of its busiest years in history. However, it will improve from here, having recently unveiled its £100 million investment. Regional airports are stepping up, and flying through Leeds Bradford Airport just got much smoother. Here’s a closer look at the recently announced developments and how they improve passenger experiences.

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) Terminal Upgrades at Scale

Most businesses prioritising customers often outperform the rest, and LBA’s latest terminal investment is a clear example. Leeds Bradford opened the first phase of its new £100 million terminal extension in June 2025, with plans to further the next phase in 2026. One of the major highlights of this project was to increase comfort for passengers, and there is no doubt that they did achieve this goal. The construction delivered 83% more seating than the previous setting. Architecturally, the extension also introduced uninterrupted runway views to increase the visual appeal to travellers. We discovered other additions like faster baggage reclaim and passport control.

One of the most prevailing pain points for many travellers is waiting for luggage, and with the recent upgrade, passengers can experience fewer delays and faster turnaround times. To complement the baggage improvements, the arrival experience was also worked on to complement the baggage improvements, so overall flying seems less of an ordeal and smoother for passengers. The priority of the phase one upgrade was clear in the design, and considering how much LBA’s passenger count shot up in August, it’s easy to see that the airport succeeded in delivering as planned. They broke records in August, with 530,000 passengers, making it their busiest month ever. 2025 overall has welcomed over three million passengers. Results like this show how much improving the system means to customers.

The second phase of the development is also well underway, and this time will focus on refurbishing existing terminal infrastructure for both private jet and commercial flights. With this next phase, the airport aims to improve every step of the passengers’ journey without leaving anything behind. At the same time, they are focusing on ensuring that the airport remains operational even amidst construction. Although this will be challenging, the team is dedicated to making it work. As the CEO of Leeds Bradford Airport, Vincent Hodder, noted, “Running a live construction site while continuing to deliver record passenger numbers is no small feat, and I’m incredibly proud of the way our teams have gone above and beyond.” Ultimately, this phase will ensure LBA expands and elevates the quality of its passenger experiences.

Why It Matters

These upgrades are more than just fancy changes. They directly impact the quality of travel and keep them coming back. Looking at LBA’s statistics, the airport handled over 4.24 million passengers in 2024, a 5.8% increase over 2023. Flights also increased by 6.2% yearly, to almost 32,000 flights. Their dedication to improving passengers’ quality of travel keeps their customers coming back, and more coming on board. A survey by the Airport Operators Association found that UK travellers expect to wait no more than 12 minutes for UK/EEA passport control and 25 minutes for non-EEA travellers. Queues exceeding 45 minutes for non-EEA nationals are often seen as a failure in passenger experience. This explains why passenger control was another priority in this upgrade.

The focus of this project addresses critical touchpoints where delays and discomfort are often more visible to passengers. No one wants to book another flight after spending an hour on passport control and having their baggage misplaced, usually, among other irregularities. Seating and faster reclaim are essential for passengers. Baggage handling and passport control matter even more as passenger volume increases. LBA’s terminal upgrade is significant for Leeds and Bradford, as a case study on how regional airports should continually prioritise service and quality.

Raising The Bar for Regional Airports

Leeds Bradford is proving that regional airports can deliver far more than basic conveniences for travellers; without doubt, this should be the standard. The upgrades are keeping pace with record passenger numbers and reshaping expectations of what regional travel should feel like. The needs of passengers should come first, and with countless reports showing their major grievances, there is no room for negligence. Aviation companies are also businesses, and there should be a constant reminder that every entrepreneur is obligated to prioritise their consumers’ everyday experiences.

Yorkshire is one of those rare places where you can wake up to the sound of waves crashing against cliffs and, by the afternoon, find yourself winding through green valleys dotted with stone villages. This mix of coastline, countryside, and culture makes it a dream for motorhome travellers. With the rise of UK staycations and a surge in motorhome ownership, more people are discovering just how well Yorkshire fits the bill for a road-based adventure. In this article, we’ll explore the best routes, must-see attractions, and practical tips to help you plan a memorable motorhome holiday in this northern gem.

Why is Yorkshire perfect for motorhome holidays?

Yorkshire, often called “God’s Own Country,” offers a combination of natural beauty and practical convenience that few regions can match. Its varied geography means you can go from sandy beaches to wild moorlands in under an hour, while centuries of history provide cultural stops that give every journey more depth. Accessibility is another big draw: with major motorways linking it to cities like Manchester and London, Yorkshire is within easy reach for most UK travellers.

What really sets Yorkshire apart, though, is how motorhome-friendly it is. Campsites are plentiful and well-equipped, many with electric hook-ups and waste disposal, and the region’s affordability makes it easier to stretch a holiday budget without cutting corners. If you’re planning a trip and considering upgrading your vehicle, you can get motorhome valuation from The Motorhome Trader to make sure you’re travelling with the right model for your needs. Food, festivals, and heritage towns like York or Harrogate add cultural flavour to the scenic backdrop, creating a complete package for travellers who want more than just views out of a window.

Key factors that make Yorkshire ideal for motorhome holidays include:

Scenic variety: coastline, dales, moors, and historic towns

Accessibility from major UK cities

A wide network of motorhome-friendly campsites

Budget-friendly travel options compared to other tourist-heavy regions

What are the best coastal routes in Yorkshire for motorhomes?

Yorkshire’s coastline stretches for more than 90 miles, offering some of the most dramatic seascapes in England. For motorhome travellers, these coastal roads combine wide-open views with convenient stopovers in charming seaside towns. The mix of fishing villages, sandy beaches, and cultural landmarks means every mile offers something worth stopping for.

The Yorkshire Coast Road (Whitby to Scarborough)

This is one of the most iconic stretches of road in northern England. Starting in Whitby, known for its abbey and connections to Dracula, the route winds along the coast before reaching Scarborough with its golden beaches and lively promenades. Campsites around both towns are well set up for motorhomes, and parking is available at park-and-ride sites to avoid congestion in town centres.

Highlights include:

Whitby Abbey and the historic harbour

Sandsend Beach, a quieter alternative to busy resorts

Scarborough Castle overlooking the bay

Flamborough to Bridlington

This route combines rugged cliffside scenery with classic seaside fun. Flamborough Head is famous for its chalk cliffs and dramatic sea views, while Bempton Cliffs attracts birdwatchers from across the UK. The drive then leads to Bridlington, a town with sandy beaches and a traditional holiday feel.

Recommended stops along the way:

Flamborough Head lighthouse walks

Bempton Cliffs nature reserve

Bridlington Harbour and South Beach

Saltburn to Staithes and Runswick Bay

For travellers who enjoy a quieter, more intimate route, the road from Saltburn to Staithes and Runswick Bay offers fishing villages tucked into cliffs and hidden coves. Roads can be narrow in parts, so careful manoeuvring is required, but the reward is discovering places where time seems to stand still.

Key points of interest:

Saltburn Pier and Victorian town charm

Staithes, once home to Captain Cook

Runswick Bay, ideal for a peaceful overnight stop

Which countryside drives in Yorkshire are ideal for motorhomes?

Beyond the coast, Yorkshire’s countryside drives offer wide views, winding lanes, and endless chances to stop in welcoming villages. Each area has its own character, from limestone valleys to open moorland.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park

The Dales are made for slow drives and lingering visits. Narrow stone walls line the roads, but most are manageable for motorhomes. Villages like Grassington or Hawes make perfect base stops, and attractions like Malham Cove add natural drama.

Highlights include:

Grassington’s market square

Malham Cove limestone cliffs

Hawes, home of Wensleydale cheese

The North York Moors National Park

This region offers wide open landscapes covered in heather, punctuated by steam railways and ancient abbeys. Motorhome routes cross moorland before dipping into villages like Helmsley or Pickering, both known for history and food.

Highlights include:

Goathland, famous from TV’s Heartbeat

Helmsley Castle and village shops

North Yorkshire Moors Railway starting in Pickering

The Pennine Way Access Roads

For a wilder experience, the Pennine routes are less travelled but full of rugged beauty. Roads here are narrower and better suited to confident drivers, but they reward with solitude and landscapes that feel untouched. Always check for passing places before committing to a route.

What are the top motorhome-friendly campsites and stopovers in Yorkshire?

A motorhome holiday depends on good places to stay, and Yorkshire delivers. From seaside sites with ocean views to quiet retreats in the hills, there’s a site for every style of traveller. Facilities often include electric hook-ups, water refill points, and waste disposal, with some adding extras like Wi-Fi or playgrounds for families.

Coastal campsites worth staying at

Popular options include sites near Whitby and Scarborough, where you can enjoy sea views and quick access to attractions. Bridlington also has family-friendly sites within walking distance of beaches.

Countryside retreats for peace and views

For a quieter escape, look for sites in the Yorkshire Dales or Moors. Many are within walking distance of hiking trails, allowing you to park up and explore on foot.

Wild camping and overnight parking rules in Yorkshire

Wild camping is limited in England, and Yorkshire follows the national rules. Overnight stays are only allowed with landowner permission. Motorhome travellers should stick to designated stopovers or use apps to find legal parking spots.

Dos and don’ts include:

Do use recognised stopovers with waste disposal

Don’t park overnight in restricted coastal areas

Do leave no trace when staying in rural areas

How can you prepare for a Yorkshire motorhome trip?

Preparation makes the difference between a smooth holiday and unnecessary stress. Yorkshire’s variety means planning is essential, especially in peak summer when campsites book up quickly.

Steps to take before setting off:

Plan your route, balancing coast and countryside

Book campsites early during peak season

Pack essentials like walking boots and cooking supplies

Check vehicle safety: tyres, brakes, water tanks

Apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) if required for your trip

Driving tips for Yorkshire’s coastal and countryside roads

Take care on narrow country lanes with limited passing points

Use park-and-ride services for visiting larger towns like York

Avoid peak traffic times in seaside resorts

Seasonal considerations for motorhome holidays

Each season has its own rewards and challenges. Spring brings blossom and quieter roads. Summer offers long days but heavier crowds. Autumn gives colourful scenery with fewer tourists. Winter can be harsh, especially on higher roads, but offers solitude.

What are the cultural and food experiences you shouldn’t miss?

Yorkshire isn’t just about scenery — it’s also a cultural and culinary hub. Every route can be enriched with local food, historic sites, or seasonal festivals.

Food specialities include:

Yorkshire pudding with roast beef

Whitby fish and chips

Wensleydale cheese

Top historic sites accessible by motorhome routes

Fountains Abbey near Ripon

Castle Howard between York and Malton

Whitby Abbey on the coast

Yorkshire food trails by motorhome

Travellers can combine scenic drives with local produce stops, sampling everything from farm shops in the Dales to breweries in Masham.

What are the advantages of choosing Yorkshire over other UK regions for motorhome holidays?

Yorkshire has a mix of qualities that make it stand out compared to other popular motorhome destinations. It offers diversity without overwhelming costs or crowds.

Advantages include:

Coast, countryside, and historic cities in one region

Wide campsite network

Easy access from northern and southern UK cities

Blend of culture, nature, and affordability

How does Yorkshire compare to the Lake District or Cornwall?

Lake District: stunning but busier and more expensive

Cornwall: dramatic coastlines but further travel and limited campsite space

Yorkshire: balanced scenery, easier access, and generally lower costs

Practical FAQs for motorhome travellers in Yorkshire

Travellers often wonder about day-to-day logistics. Yorkshire is well set up, but knowing the basics helps avoid surprises.

Common concerns include:

Where to refuel: plenty of petrol stations along main routes

Shopping: large supermarkets in towns like York and Leeds

Service points: many campsites include water and waste facilities

Pet-friendly sites: most allow dogs with small fees

Is it expensive to tour Yorkshire in a motorhome?

Typical costs include £20–£35 per night at campsites, fuel depending on route length, and meals ranging from affordable fish and chips to higher-end dining.

Can you rent motorhomes locally in Yorkshire?

Yes, local rental companies and national firms offer vehicles. Daily rates average £100–£150 depending on season and size.

What mistakes should first-time motorhome travellers in Yorkshire avoid?

Avoidable mistakes include:

Not booking sites early in summer

With minimal packaging and produce that hasn’t travelled far, you’re doing your bit for the environment too.

So, the next time your cupboards are running low, why not visit one of Yorkshire’s farm shops?
